The multi-function printer works fine in the first week of operation but there are some feature limitations that need to be disclosed before purchase. Overall, I like the square, linear design to the printer and the print quality and speed exceeds my necessities. The problem is there is no manual with the printer to explain the system menu or features, the Canon software has great features but lacks quality, and there is no USB printer cable included. The cost at under $150 was reasonable enough given the overall package, but I would not pay more given the trade-offs I have discovered so far. Shipping was fast and the package was the original Canon box which faired okay through delivery. I could only try wireless operation as I do not have a USB cable and once one printer was configured all of my other PCs discovered it (for simple printing) without having to install any drivers or software. The build quality is good and there is easy access to the main internal mechanics for paper jam removal and quick servicing.PRINTAs soon as I got the printer I hooked it up to our wireless network, updated the firmware, and tried a few print jobs. The quality, speed, and double-sided printing are all great. The only negative points I noticed is if printing a 200pg dbl-sided PDF from the web browser over WiFi the browser needs to stay open for the duration, otherwise it cancels the print job. Print from an iPhone over WiFi was a breeze. Also, the starter ink cartridge used a little more ink than I thought it would per page, using about 25% for about 220 pages. The starter cartridge came loaded with about 50-60% ink level.COPYCopying works as expected; however, the at times the speed of the document feeder tilts the output ever so slightly. Not an issue but for those needing perfection may prefer the glass copy and scan option.FAXI have not had the chance to test the fax function yet.SCAN and SOFTWAREScanning works great overall but there are some key limitations associated with the Canon software that should be noted before making the purchase. You can use both feeder and glass and initiate the job from either the touch screen or computer and have the results automatically save and appear on the destination computer you choose/started the job from. I have not tried any of Canon's fancy features but they all seem useful and relatively easy to use. The problem with scanning is Canon's software only allows 300 dpi if you do scanning the easy way, either from the feeder or glass. If you want 600 dpi scanning you have to launch the scan tool, select B&W/Color/etc., check and apply the print driver, start scan, select the advanced tab, select 600 dpi, and then scan. However, from Canon's software you can only scan at 600 dpi from the glass and it is of average quality compared to Windows Fax and Scan Utility. If you use Windows Fax and Scan you have to scan one page at a time from the glass at 600 dpi and the quality comes out superb. The negative here is that you have to hack your way to the highest quality scan and you lose any benefit Canon's software provides. There is no way of using the feeder at 600 dpi which is extremely unfortunate, as I would have appreciate a slower scan speed for higher quality feeder scans. If you want a quick scan and the font is over 12pts, the easy scanning is good enough. If you have color pictures or 10pt or smaller font then you need to use Windows Fax and Scan and the glass to get the best quality image to your PC.TOUCHSCREEN and MENUOverall, the touchscreen is okay and works well enough to allow the user to interface with the printer. The menus are a little convoluted and the low resolution screen does not help when trying to decipher what each option does. If I had a manual to understand what each option did, perhaps the menu would be more approachable and easy to use.I bought this to replace a 10+ year old. Brother mfc printer. The brother was still working but not printing well, time for new drum or fuser making it not worth fixing given its age... Or maybe it was Its built like a tank unlike this unit.First the build quality leaves a lot behind. Thinner more flexible plastic, it weighs 1/2 of what the old printer did. This is especially apparent in the small wobbly hinges that let you raise the top for single page scans. They feel like any misguided bump will simply snap them off, they are that wobbly....although my old printer with better plastic hinges was broken by careless guest years ago.... Why can't they put metal hinges in ? Or at least have one metal side part to strengthen the hinge up ? Seems to be major failure point.Major failure : you can't use both wifi and Ethernet at the same time ! So if you want to wireless print and use the nether net port your wifi device has to connect to the network wifi point, not direct to the printer. That means you can't open the printer to guests for printing only and keep them off your primary network. Worse is that the USB port must be specifically enabled in a deep menu to be used, while excluding the enet and wifi. That's just beyond stupid. So if some one wants to plug their laptop into the sub port to print something quick , you have to manually enable it via front panel, then remember to switch printer back to other interface. If I'd known this I probably would not of bought it.The touch screen is low quality. While readable, it's a rather course dot pattern. It's touch screen is quirky and often takes several tries to get the right spot. Maybe it's my slightly large fingers... Or not but getting the right spot is a pain. Thankfully the printer does have web interface to access everything which is faster . The web interface is crude in its non-design, but works faster than the touch screen. Once you set up your network you should not need to really use the touch screen much except to change from print to copy mode.Yes it does do fax, but who does those any more ? They could of removed this and used the same money to improve the hinges or touch screen. The buttons on the front are pretty chintzy too.Print quality is ok. Lightweight paper ran thru and left a lot of fine toner behind. Using the lightweight paper set3ting in the paper settings of the print Dialog helped clean it up. Printed labels ok.It doesn't have a real paper tray. It's a compartment on the bottom that's a bit annoying to feed. The single paper slot works fine and you can put at least several sheets in and it will work, at least it did for me. Nice when you want to print several labels and not reload the paper slot. It's also a bit loud. Printer actually has a quiet print mode which you can set in menus to take effect at specific times - like at night and on certain days.Toner high capacity vers is limited to 2500 pages. That is many printers low capacity vers. I knew this. Given I'll probably replace the toner every 2 years I was ok with that. If you do any sort of real printing you'll want a printer that can take a real 5k-10k capacity toner cart.It does print fast, starts up quick.Overall, given its fragile build quality and low capacity toner this is very much a casual home use machine only. If you really print a lot you'll need to look at spending about twice as much to get into a real. Small office grade MFC printer....Excelente impresora. This all-in-one replaced a 10 yr old imageCLASS MF5700 series. It is faster, quieter, smaller, wireless/USB and the document feeder may work better too. Installation was not totally simple which was irritating. I'm also using the Windows scan software rather than Canon's, which does not seem as versatile. I use it for light office work only, and have only had it installed for a couple weeks, so time will tell. Seems like a good updated version of a printer I liked. The installation was painless and the printer is working well. For the price, this is a solid monochrome 3-in-1 with the additional bonus of automatic duplex in printer mode. I'm quite happy with my purchase.Prints very fast, great on ink. Does everything that I need it to. Totally recommend this item for a small office save yourself ink and waiting time. Dump your inkjet that is just for home use.
